puttin my 2 cents in…

Inspired by Gina over at fitnessista I decided to write a little piece on healthy eating on the cheap. Many people think it’s more expensive to eat healthy and while some items are a bit pricey, healthy meals are easy to make if you go to the grocery store prepared.

1. Buy things on sale! I can’t stress this enough; use coupons(only on items you actually need) and scan your weekly store flyer to find great deals. Whole wheat pasta is more expensive than regular; so stock up when it’s discounted!

2. Go veg!(at least a few nights)- veggie protein sources like beans(canned or dried), tofu, and frozen edamame are great to toss into salads, pasta, and stir-frys and cost much less than their animal counterparts. Also try eggs, milk and yogurt when you need to bump up your protein.

3. Make your meals at home- eating meals out usually leads to consuming more fat and calories. It is just as hard on your wallet as it is your waistline(sorry, I couldn’t resist the corny pun). The less you do take-out and restaurant food the more you’ll save.

4. Practice portion control: the less food you eat, the less food you’ll have to buy!

5. Try frozen fruits and veggies. They are just as healthy as the fresh and usually cost less. Just be sure to double check the ingredient list for added sugars or salt.

These are just some tips. I’m sure you all have good ideas to help save money while eating healthy too. In other news…..

…One meal we had this week at my house was this citrus-soy stir-fry with tofu, veggies and whole wheat pasta. It was so good and made so much more than the 4 servings it said. It’s a Rachel Ray recipe that my Aunt G and I saw her make on her talk show this week. You can find the recipe here: mmm..stirfry

It reminded me of a less-greasy version of lo-mein noodles. It was also slightly sweet because of the orange marmalade. It was delicious and I highly recommend it.

Happy Friday to everyone and if you’re in Boston enjoy the fabulous weather we should be having all weekend!
